Why Check Your Homework for AI Content?

Homework assignments are increasingly being completed with AI assistance, creating challenges for educators trying to assess genuine student learning. Plagly.ai's Homework AI Checker is designed for teachers, parents, and students who want to verify the authenticity of homework submissions. Our detector analyzes text for patterns consistent with AI generation across all major models — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and more — providing sentence-level results that clearly indicate which portions appear AI-written. The tool handles various homework formats including short answers, longer written responses, and full essay assignments. Because homework assignments vary widely in length and complexity, our engine is optimized to deliver reliable results even on shorter texts that are typical of homework responses.

How to Check Homework Content for AI

What to watch for when checking homework content for AI:

  • Answers more polished or formal than the student's usual level.
  • Complete, textbook-perfect explanations with no working-out or mistakes.
  • Generic phrasing that never references the specific class or materials.
  • Sudden vocabulary jumps between questions.
  • An essay-like, confident tone on short-answer questions.

Short homework is the hardest thing to check

Homework is usually short — a few paragraphs, a problem set write-up, a set of answers. That length is where AI detection is at its weakest, and any tool that returns a confident percentage on 80 words is telling you more about its marketing than about the text.

Detection needs volume

The signals detectors rely on are statistical: how predictable the word choices are and how much sentence length varies. Both need enough sentences to be meaningful. Under roughly 100 words the measurement is closer to a coin flip, which is why we would rather say so than produce a number.

Short answers are legitimately formulaic

A correct answer to a maths or science question tends to look the same however it was produced, because the content constrains the phrasing. There is often no stylistic room left for a human fingerprint to show up in.

The interesting signal is the working, not the answer

Where AI shows up in homework is usually in explanation: an unusually polished justification attached to an otherwise ordinary answer, or reasoning that is fluent but subtly disconnected from the steps above it. Check the prose around the answer rather than the answer.

Assignment design beats detection

Asking students to show intermediate steps, comment on their own approach, or connect the task to something discussed in class produces evidence that a detector cannot. It is more work to set and far more reliable than any score.

If you take one thing from this page: a high score on a short homework answer is not usable evidence. Treat it as a prompt to ask the student about their working, which is the part that actually distinguishes understanding from retrieval.
